Introduction to Water Skills

Students will learn how to feel comfortable in the water and safely enjoy it.

Children comfortable in water without a parent. Introduces looking under the water and retrieving toys and front and back gliding with assistance and floating. Goal is to increase child's confidence and begin swimming without assistance.

Preschool Aquatics Level 1

Skills


  • Enter water using ramps, steps or side
  • Exit water using ladder, steps or side
  • Blow bubble for 3 seconds
  • Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front glide and recover to a vertical position
  • Back float for 3 seconds
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Arm and hand treading actions
  • Alternating and simultaneous leg actions and arm actions on back
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front
  • Combined arm and leg actions on back

Exit Skills


  • With Support to go to the next level
  • Enter independently, using either ramp, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, submerge to mouth and blow bubbles for at least 3 seconds then safely exit the water. (Children can walk, move along the gutter or “swim”)

  • Enter water by stepping in from deck or low height
  • Exit water using ladder, steps or side
  • Bobbing, 5 times
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front glide and recover to a vertical position
  • Front float for 3 seconds
  • Back glide and recover to a vertical position
  • Back float for 15 seconds
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Tread water using arm and leg actions for 15 seconds
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front
  • Finning arm action on back
  • Combined arm and leg actions on back

Exit Skills


  • With Assistance to go to the next level
  • Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll on back for 15 seconds, then recover to a vertical position.
  • Glide on back for at least 2 body lengths, roll to front, then recover to a vertical position.
  • Swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for at least 3 body lengths, roll to back ,float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then continue swimming on for at least 3 body lengths.
  • *Level 2 Skills may be performed with Assistance
